Synopsis
In a Horizon special, naturalist Sir David Attenborough investigates whether the world is heading for a population crisis.
In his lengthy career, Sir David has watched the human population more than double from 2.5 billion in 1950 to nearly seven billion. He reflects on the profound effects of this rapid growth, both on humans and the environment.
While much of the projected growth in human population is likely to come from the developing world, it is the lifestyle enjoyed by many in the West that has the most impact on the planet. Some experts claim that in the UK consumers use as much as two and a half times their fair share of Earth's resources.
Sir David examines whether it is the duty of individuals to commit not only to smaller families, but to change the way they live for the sake of humanity and planet Earth.
GCC Countries are poised to be at the forefront in investing in clean energy technologies due to plentiful sources of solar and wind energy, adequate technological research, infrastructure and financial capital.
Just some of the activity in the Middle East environmental sector include:
$25 billion invested in solar & wind energy in the GCC Region over the next 10 years
In Saudi Arabia, King Abdullah announced a donation of $300 million for research into helping the environment, including investments into technology for carbon storage and capture
$200 million waste management budget for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
$20 billion allocated for waste to energy in Dubai, U.A.E alone
In Qatar, solid waste management contracts of $1.7 billion and $3.9 billion
$3.6 billion invested in energy resources in Kuwait
$800 million invested in energy resources in Oman
By 2020 the installed volume of global wind power generation will reach 1.2 billion GW nearly 13 times that of 2007

In our emails to you, we've kept you updated on the severity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. We've shared some staggering statistics. We've also presented inspiring stories about the people whose lives are being transformed through the Clinton Foundation's work.
On World AIDS Day -- Tuesday, December 1 -- we'd like to provide you with much more than an email update. You're invited to a special event featuring President Clinton who will discuss the current AIDS crisis and the progress we've made.
The event -- hosted by the Clinton Foundation and the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP) at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health -- begins at 12:15 p.m. EST on Tuesday in New York City.
Please note: Admission tickets are granted on "first come, first served" basis. We will email you on Monday, November 30, to let you know if you have a ticket. The email will serve as your admission ticket. Doors open at noon.
If you sign up, you could be one of three people to receive a signed copy of Bill Clinton's memoir, My Life, as well as tea produced by farmers we work with in Rwanda.
World AIDS Day has special importance to us because of our longtime commitment to turning the tide on this deadly disease. Thanks to the support of individuals like you, we're supporting HIV/AIDS treatment for 220,000 children, in partnership with UNITAID. And we've been able to give more than 2 million people access to lifesaving HIV/AIDS medicines.
Please join us in commemorating World AIDS Day by participating in this special event with President Clinton, hosted by the Clinton Foundation and ICAP.
